Welcome to Keller Marine & RV

Tribute to George F Keller founder Keller Marine & RV

George F Keller was born in the heart of the great depression on June 26, 1933. He was born to Emalene Ferry Keller and George” Flanders” Keller alias “Poggy Keller”. When he was just a young boy his father was forced to commute to Southern Virginia weekly to find work on a government construction job. As he grew the depression ended and his Father moved back home and found work in the silk mill. As he worked in the silk mill, Flanders started to dredge coal from the Susquehanna River on his off hours. He worked many weeks working 90 hours or more to make ends meet for the family. As he got better at dredging coal he made enough money to buy equipment and dredge full time. Dredging coal gave Flanders the need for the making of large coal flats from wood, so much wood that in order to buy the wood at a great price he opened a plaining mill in Port Trevorton on the site that Keller Marine & RV currently resides.

When Flanders was in full production of coal and wood, his brother-in- law, Leroy Ferry, showed up with a Chris Craft kit boat pattern and wanted to build boats for a living. Flanders said this sounded like more fun than running a planning mill and they started Keller Kraft wooden boats. George graduated high school and started to work for Flanders in his many businesses. George was so intelligent he had skipped multiple elementary school grades and he graduated high school at the ripe old age of 16, in 1950. After working in the business world and digging ditches and unloading dump truck loads of coal by hand, he decided that a college degree was in his future. In September of 1951 he enrolled at Penn State University. He graduated 4 years later in May 1955. George then enlisted in the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army. While George was in the Navy his father sold the boat building company, Keller Kraft, to a firm in Newport, PA in 1956. On August 24th 1957, George married his girlfriend Margaret Yohn, immediately after being honorably discharged from the Navy. When George got out of the Navy in 1957 he could not get a job. He went to his Father for advice and Flanders told him that he should get into the distribution of parts for boats business. Flanders said that when he was building boats he could never get the parts in a reasonable time. George took his Father’s advice and started Keller Marine Service, Inc., in 1958. George hired Phyllis and Loyal Jones as his first two employees of Keller Marine Service, Inc. George went on the road in his Chevy Suburban and started a tradition that continues at the company today, sales and delivery. George was a business disrupter with the new model and would tell his customers that his lead time on parts was the time it took to walk to his Suburban. George immediately became a top performer for all the lines he took on, winning awards from AC spark plugs, NW controls, StarCraft, Glastron, and many more lines.

In April of 1960 when his business was starting to blossom he and Margaret were blessed with their first child, a daughter, Lori Keller Morrow. When Lori came on the scene, George and Margaret were living in a small travel trailer in the village of Port Trevorton. With the addition of a child it was time to build a house. In August of 1960 George and Margaret moved into a new house in Port Trevorton. December of 1963 George and Margaret added another member to the family Mike Keller. Model year 1964 saw George adding-Glaston boats to his line card. He was now the Mid-Atlantic distributor for both Starcraft and Glastron boats. Keller Marine was off and running and George had finally gotten a taste of success in the Marine business. In the late 1960s Starcraft got into the Camper business and Keller Marine Service, INC started to sell campers. At that time George started to get involved in banking he served on the board of the Snyder County Trust bank all through the 70s. George also invested in RV and Camper production at a manufacturing plant in Port Trevorton, called Sun N’ Fun. In late 70’s and early 80’s George became president of the National Marine Distributors association, and the Warehouse Distributors Association. In 1976 he won the Mel Barr award for the man of the year in the Marine aftermarket industry. In 1993 George retired from Keller Marine & RV. In 1996 he won the Jim Barker award for the person of the year in the RV Aftermarket industry.

In 1997 he became the chairman of the board of Sun Bank and held that position until the year 2000. George was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 25 years. He served the Susquehanna Economic Development Association--Council of Governments (SEDA-COG) and was a past Regional Vice President and Director of the Central Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. He has served on the corporation's Board from 1982- 2000. George enjoyed 20 years of traveling with Margaret around the world to places like Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, and spent a great deal of time in the Cayman Islands, the Hawaiian Islands and Aruba. George loved traveling with Margaret until his health declined to the point he could no longer travel. He spent his last years in his home in Port Trevorton, that was built in 1960. That is also where he was when he passed into eternity to be with his heavenly Father. George was a devout Christian that brought the love of Christ wherever he went. He served -on the administrative board at Hope Church in Port Trevorton for over 25 years. George was also a Gideon and always witnessed to the saving power of Jesus Christ whenever he could. George will be missed by many and especially his family and co-workers at Keller Marine & RV. George was a pillar in the community for many years and he has left a void that will not soon be filled.
